In our Flash Feast series, we&#8217;ve invited some flash superstars to share some videos and posts over the course of the day.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In our second Flash Feast, Jonathan Cardew of <a href=\"https:\/\/bendinggenres.com\/\">Bending Genres<\/a> shares some insights about fun and form in flash&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Eighteen Bullet Points, or (re)Forming Flash,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Making It Not Crap<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Jonathan Cardew<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">If you are like me and you\u2019re rubbish at writing and you\u2019ve got nothing of real worth to say and you\u2019re just counting down the minutes on this earth waiting for inspiration, then you might just need to form the crap out of your flash. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">By form, I mean structure. By structure, I mean a straightjacket. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Paragraphs are a straightjacket. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">But we\u2019re bored of paragraphs, aren\u2019t we? <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When we write a well-structured paragraph, with a nice lead in and logical close, we want to kill ourselves, don\u2019t we? <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Every woman and her labradoodle has written a paragraph. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We are not every woman and her mixed breed canine. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">So, we\u2019re going to blow the pants off form! <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We\u2019re going to do what Jennifer Fliss does in <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/barrenmagazine.com\/all-in-one-magic-soap\/\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u>Barren Magazine<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> and we\u2019re going to write a story on the side of a cleaning product bottle. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We\u2019re going to forget about narrative ENTIRELY (well, not entirely) and we\u2019re going to write a list of objects like Thaddeus Gunn does in <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kenyonreview.org\/kr-online-issue\/2019-mayjune\/selections\/thaddeus-gunn-656342\/\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u>Kenyon Review Online<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We\u2019re going to madlib a story like Kim Magowan does in her flash over at <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/okaydonkeymag.com\/2018\/09\/21\/madlib-by-kim-magowan\/\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u>Okaydonkey<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We\u2019re going to read EVERYTHING at <\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/thediagram.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #1155cc;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><u>Diagram<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> because form is the name of the game there, and we\u2019re definitely going to read everything there right now this instant.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">There is no such thing as crap writing. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We just sometimes need bullet points. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Bullet points are a liberation! <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">They keep going. <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">And going.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Also, paragraphs are fine.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-915\" src=\"http:\/\/host2021.temp.domains\/~nationo0\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/JCardew_Auhor-Photo-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>Jonathan Cardew is a contributing editor for Best Microfiction and blog editor\/ workshop leader for <em>Bending Genres<\/em>.
